Polymarket smart money, explained

On Polymarket, smart money is the money held by wallets with a proven, profitable record across many resolved markets. Polkyo measures, for each side of a market, its smart money share: the part of that side's money held by wallets in profit overall, each judged by its record as of when it entered. When one side's share is clearly higher, the historically profitable traders lean that way.

How it is measuredWhat it cannot tell youHow to use itWhere smart money is most split right nowQuestions

How it is measured

For every holder of every big market, Polkyo looks up the wallet's record over its resolved markets: profit and loss, winrate, and how many markets it is based on. A side's smart money share is the money held by wallets in profit overall, divided by the money held by every wallet with a record. The lean is the gap between the two sides' shares.

The record is taken as of when the wallet entered the market, so a side that merely rose in price, making its holders look profitable after the fact, does not look smart.

What it cannot tell you

A share is only as good as the money behind it. If one side has $3,500 of scored money and the other $1.9 million, comparing their percentages is noise; Polkyo's data checks count such thin sides, and the market pages show how much money each share rests on.

"In profit overall" is a threshold: a wallet up $5 after three markets counts as much as one up $2 million after five hundred. The Polkyo Score weighs the record more finely, and skill is often specific to a category.

Most of all, the market already knows. Polkyo's research compares how often the smart side wins with what its price implied; where the two match, following smart money adds nothing the price did not already say.

How to use it

  1. Read the lean together with the coverage: how many scored wallets and how much scored money sit on each side.
  2. Check the trend: a share that has moved over the week says more than a snapshot.
  3. Open the biggest holders on each side and read their records, rather than trusting one number.
  4. Compare with the research for that kind of market (category, size, how strong the lean is) before reading anything into it.
